Port Blair, June 15: In order to prevent the outbreak of COVID-19 in Port Blair City, PBMC has been taking the following initiatives with an active participation of Self Help Groups formed under DAY-NULM scheme of Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs.

The Hon’ble Prime Minister of India envisioned “Arthma Nirbar Bharat” to fight against COVID-19 and insisted to focus on empowerment of vulnerable group of section especially women. The Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs, Govt. of India also instructed all States /UT to handhold Self Help Group formed under the DAY-NULM scheme during this situation.

The modern fish market at Mohanpura was constructed by the Fisheries Department and inaugurated by Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Chief Secretary, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, which was later handed over to PBMC for operation & maintenance.

Subsequently, the PBMC as per the guidelines of DAY-NULM , Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs, Govt. of India mobilized and formed the vulnerable group of Fisherman SHG namely “Port Blair Fisherman SHG” Mohanpura, as they are the actual stakeholders selling fishes in the market since the beginning. The 11 Nos. member SHGs were brought into social security net and scope of self-reliant is evaluated in terms of provisions of the DAY-NULM.

In order to handhold the “Port Blair Fisherman SHG”, the PBMC  executed first of its kind an agreement on 15th June 2020 between  Port Blair  Fishermen Self Help Group, Mohanpura, Port Blair, for operation & maintenance of Mohanpura Fish Market  for a period of three years,  so as to provide  self-sustaining platform for the vulnerable fisherman community.

During the COVID -19 pandemic, the Women SHGs formed under DAY-NULM substantially contributed stitching of 8764 Nos. cloth mask to fight against the COVID-19 and ensured livelihood for their family.

Further, the PBMC is also planning to entrust the operation & maintenance of 25 Nos. Water ATMs, Community Toilets and Compost Yard to SHGs formed under DAY-NULM.

The PBMC is committed for empowerment of women and vulnerable occupational group across the society on top priority.
