Port Blair, July 30: In a small ceremony organised at the Police Headquarters, the Director General of Police Sh. Dependra Pathak (IPS) flagged off the "Hawk" squad.

"Hawk" squad is a squad of 8 motorcycles, which are equipped with modern gadgets. The islands have seen a sharp rise in the new cases of Covid-19 in last few days and the police is making all-out efforts through a two-pronged approach of spreading the awareness through public announcement systems installed on the police vehicles as well as by taking strict legal action against the violators.  The launch was particularly important in that aspect. In addition to many other gadgets, these bikes have public announcement systems fitted on them, which can be effectively used to spread awareness and this squad will be very effective in responding to the situations related to violations quickly.

On the occasion of the launch, the welcome speech was delivered by Sh. Anant Mittal (IPS), in which he briefed about the thought process behind this initiative and the modalities related to this scheme.

In his address, the Director General of Police, Sh. Dependra Pathak (IPS) reiterated the commitment of Andaman and Nicobar Police to make every islander safe, outside as well as inside threats. Touching on the topic of Covid-19 and it's increasing cases in the islands, he said that the police has been work on the ground day-and-night since the start of lockdown to facilitate and educate the public about the pandemic, but at the same time, the violators, who are putting the life of others at risk, are being strictly dealt with. He further said that introduction of "Hawk" squad is a reaffirmation of devotion of police to public service and it would further increase the outreach of police.
