Port Blair, April 16: The Port Blair Municipal Council has allowed Self Help Group for collection & transportation of segregated waste from commercial sectors in compliance with the Port Blair Municipal Council-Solid Waste (Handling & Management) Rule 2017, in accordance with the Solid Waste Management Rule 2016. The Self Help Groups engaged in the Solid Waste Management system were registered under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM).

The system will be self-sustainable model, in which the engaged SHGs will collect the daily waste from all the commercial & industrial establishments and collect a monthly user charges as per Schedule-III of the Solid Waste (Handling & Management) Rule 2017 & the rates fixed by PBMC during the meetings, towards the service provided by them. This will help in implementation of source segregation of waste form commercial establishment as well as to create their livelihood by making city clean.

In order to obtain the input from the commercial establishments & bulk waste generators, series of meetings were conducted with Andaman Chamber of Commerce & Industries (ACCI), Tour Operator Association as well as Hotels/ Restaurants & Bars, Industrial estates, i.e., Dollygunj & Garacharama and Grains/ Grocers Association/ Shops on dated 13.11.2020, 23.11.2020 & 04.12.2020. The association groups & members were agreed & supported the system.

On pilot basis, the project of door to door waste collection from commercial establishments during night hours was initiated on December 2020 at Dairy Farm and Dollygunj as a positive response the commercial stakeholders applauded the initiative.

The Self Help Group will not accept any mixed / un-segregated waste, in case any violation of the provision by the commercial establishments is found, it will be viewed seriously and necessary action will be taken against the owner.

In this connection, all the commercial and industrial establishments are requested to cooperate with the PBMC’s Solid Waste Management system, and shall hand over the segregated waste at source to Self Help Groups.
