Through education, the IGNOU tries to educate the Civil Engineers, Architect, Construction Workers, Water Resource Management Engineers and general public to adopt the rain water harvesting techniques.

For the same, the Indira Gandhi national Open University offers Certificate course in Water Harvesting and Management (CWHM) and Diploma in Watershed Management course (DWM). The Rain water harvesting essential means collection and storage of the rain water from the rooftop, for future use. The above two courses intends to generate mass awareness and disseminate skills through trained human resources, about rain water harvesting techniques and management for the optimal use of harvested water, by all concerned. One day rain water harvesting in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, may provide water requirement over a week, for a household.
