Car Nicobar, Feb. 19: A 3-day training on Disaster Management organised by the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), New Delhi in association with the District Disaster Management Authority, Nicobar began on 18th Feb. 2013. The Deputy Commissioner and the Chairman of District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Shri P Jawahar inaugurated the programme in the EOC Conference hall at Car Nicobar.

All the local heads of department, Tribal Council representatives and members of NGOs were enrolled for the training programme. In his inaugural address, the Deputy Commissioner-cum-Chairman of DDMA, Nicobar lauded the efforts taken by NIDM in response to his request to come over to Nicobar for imparting the training as well as for sponsoring the training programme under their own funds.

Speaking on the occasion, the Superintendent of Police, Nicobar district highlighted the vulnerability of the district, which demands for an immense focus on disaster preparedness and stressed the need to set up early warning system and emergency communication network in all the inhabited Island of Nicobar District.

The training started off with sharing of expectation by the officials, followed by modules on Disaster Management concepts, system in India, Disaster Risk profile of Nicobar Islands, vulnerabilities and capacities. It concluded with an experience sharing session.

This training programme will be the run-up to the forth coming mock drill exercise on 20th February 2013 during which the incident command system and the functioning of the Emergency support function system will be tested on ground.

This training programme is a milestone event for Nicobar district as it is for the first time the NIDM has come to the District for imparting training to district level officials. It will also set the foundation for the massive capacity building exercise planned by the DDMA, Nicobar under the yet to be launched District Mission on Disaster Preparedness.
