World Environment Day is celebrated on 5th of June every year throughout the world. This day is dedicated to the cause of protecting the environment and to create awareness among people of its significance.

The theme for this year is "Think. Eat. Save", which highlights the need for initiative to be taken to reduce food waste as well encourage people to choose their food that have minimum adverse impact on the environment. Food waste is a drain on our natural resources.

We are fortunate that these islands are blessed with bounties of nature, rich biodiversity and a variety of ecosystems. However, we must realise that islands ecosystems are very fragile. Hence, we must take upon ourselves this great responsibility of protecting and preserving this heritage.

On this occasion, I appeal to our people to reaffirm our commitment towards protection and conservation of our environment.
