“International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking” is observed on 26th June. This day highlights the issue of drug abuse which is a serious threat to public health and safety, particularly of youth.

Illicit drugs destroy innumerable lives and undermine our society. Teenagers and young adults are particularly vulnerable to drug abuse as at this age, peer pressure to experiment with illicit drugs is strong and self-esteem is often low. Those who take drugs are either misinformed or insufficiently aware of the health risks involved.

While Government has the responsibility to stop both drug trafficking and drug abuse, communities can make a major contribution in this fight. Families, schools, civil societies and religious organisations can raise awareness to control this evil. The media has an important role in raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.

On this occasion, I appeal to all islanders to be part of a sustained campaign to raise awareness of consequences of drug abuse and illicit trafficking and to make the Andaman & Nicobar Islands free of drugs.
