Port Blair, July 21: The PCC President, Shri Kuldeep Rai Sharma has requested the Lt Governor to consider establishing a Central University in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Sharma feels that establishment of a Central University for these islands is justified as it is the last eastern outpost of India with a population of nearly 4 lakhs, 3 districts and 501 villages and a high literacy level of about 86% while being isolated. The pass outs from all Sr Secondary Schools of these islands cannot afford to go to the mainland colleges for further studies. Therefore establishing of a university can effectively check the frustration of people and develop the region.

Accordingly, Sharma requesting for establishment of a Central University in these islands wrote that the A&N Administration has been quite positive on the issues raised by him from time to time and hoped that the present proposal for establishing a central university may also be granted by the Administrator.

Mentioning that the Prime Minister of India has stated that every State should have at least one Central University, he said that the Vice Chancellor of Pondicherry University to which all the colleges of these islands are affiliated has already recommended to the Ministry of Human Resources Development of such establishment of an exclusive University for these islands.
