Port Blair, July 31: The Department of Art and Culture, A&N Administration has invited applications from the local cultural institutions to seek financial assistance as Grant-in-aid for the year 2013-14.

As per the notified Grant-in -aid rules all registered organizations having its registered office in Andaman and Nicobar Islands with its objective of propagation of art, culture, national integration and communal harmony and are active in such work for a period of not less than one year shall be considered eligible under these rules.

Socio-Cultural Organization may send application in a plain paper enclosing i) Utilization Certificate in GFR-19 A for the GIA released during the previous year. ii) The receipt & payment statement of accounts iii) The Income & expenditure statement of accounts iv) The balance sheet v) List of present office bearers of the Association along with postal address and contact number vi) Performance -cum- achievement report for the year 2012-13.  Incomplete application shall not be entertained.

A Committee shall scrutinize the application. The Committee shall draw up a list of cultural institutions found eligible for the financial assistance and recommend the same to the Administration for release of Grant-in-aid. All the applications should reach the Directorate of Art and Culture on or before 30th August 2013. Details in this regard can be obtained over phone no. 230117.

Port Blair, July 31: AADI Festival will be celebrated in the Lord Padhinettampadi Karuppanaswamy Temple at R.G.T. Road on Saturday dated 3rd Aug. 2013 corresponding to the auspicious Tamil Year Vijaya 18th day of Aadi Month.

A special pooja will be performed to the Lord Padhinettampadi Karuppanaswamy by Goat Offering at 11.00 am and Prasad will be distributed to all the devotees and general public.

Heavy rain may occur at isolated places over Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Under the influence of strong Southwest Monsoon current, strong Southwesterly wind speed between 45 and 55 kmph and rough to very rough seas likely along and off Andaman & Nicobar coast. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea.

Port Blair, July 30: As a new initiative under Integrated Tribal Development Programme (ITDP), 19 tribal youths from different parts of Nicobar region will undergo free coaching for the prestigious Civil services examination.  The Islands Chief Secretary, Anand Prakash has inaugurated the Orientation programme for them at ITI, Dolluguanj today, as a prelude to the free coaching to be conducted at the Manida Neayam Civil Services Training Institute at Chennai.

Inaugurating the programme, he expressed his happiness over the maiden attempt made under ITDP to impart free coaching to the Nicobarese for the Civil services exams.  He exhorted the selected candidates to take the training seriously and work hard to achieve their goal.  He also assured that the administration would extend all the required assistance to them to undergo training at the mainland.

The Secretary for Tribal welfare, Theva Neethi Das informed that the Free coaching to the Nicobarese would be conducted jointly with the reputed training institute, Manida Neyam at Chennai under ITDP and hoped that it would develop the skills and talents of the Nicobarese students to crack the civil services examinations.

Briefing on the coaching programme, the Deputy Commissioner of Nicobar District, P Jawahar informed that 19 Nicobarese youths from different tribal islands including Car Nicobar, Theresa and Nancowrie have been selected for the orientation programme of 15 days duration conducted by the faculty from the Manida Neyam, Chennai.   He also revealed that the selected trainees will be given the stipend of Rs. 5000 per month to meet the expenses during their coaching programme at Chennai.

According to the Director of Manida Neyam Civil Services Training Institute,Karthigeyan,  170 candidates trained by the institute  cracked the civil services examinations and joined the coveted civil services during the last five years. 

 

Car Nicobar, July 30: The Disaster Management Directorate in association with the Police unit led by the SHO Shri Lallan Yadav and Fire Services conducted ‘mock drill exercise’ today at the Government Senior Secondary School Lapathy. The Resource persons trained the students about the safety measures to be taken during Earth Quakes.

The drill began at 11 am with the ringing of the alarming bell. Students acted promptly and responded to what they were taught during the session. Following the safety norms they came out of the room and proceeded towards the evacuation route to reach to the safer place.

The student members of the Task Force rushed into each class room to search the injured students. They lifted the injured students and brought them to the ground where they were given first aid. The seriously injured students were taken to the ambulance. The Resource Persons later pointed out the mistakes committed by the students during the drill in a follow up session after the drill. The AD of the Disaster Management department Shri Gyan Singh asked the students to practise the taught tricks at home and make their family members aware of the safety measures.

In his Address the Vice Principal of the school Shri P. Abdul Rehman said that the school’s teachers quite often conduct the theoretical classes to make the students aware of the precautionary measures to be taken during the disaster like Earth Quake and this kind of practical training is very beneficial.

After the Mock drill the Car Nicobar Unit of Fire Services demonstrated the use of their modern equipments which are used by them at time of calamity. The Station Officer Shri Dilip Karmakar demonstrated the working of Power Chain Saw, Air Lifting Bag, Hydraulic Spreader & Cutter etc; which was a new learning experience for the students and they were very excited to see the lively display.

Port Blair, July 30: The advertisement for the post of SSCT/BRP/CRP published in the Administration’s mouthpiece ‘The Daily Telegrams’ on 29th July 2013 has come as a blow to the jobless teachers who have crossed the age limit prescribed in the vacancy notice. A group of such unemployed teachers approached the PCC President Shri Kuldeep Rai Sharma explaining their agony of an uncertain future.

The teachers explained that if the Sarava Shiksha Adbhiyan is strict to age limit of 30 years then many of them will never be able to fulfil their desire of serving the islands as a teacher.

Hearing the teachers’ plea Sharma has request to the Secretary and Director Education, A&N Administration to relax the norms of age limit from 30 – 38 years stating that the services of the teachers engaged under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan are not regular in nature.

Car Nicobar, July 30: The School Management Committee of the Senior Secondary School Lapathy for the Session 2013-14 was constituted today. The First Headman of the Lapathy village Shri Manuah Thomas was elected the Chairman of the committee.

A large gathering of the parents and guardians of the students elected two members from each village in the committee, in the meeting held at the village community hall. To monitor the other aspects of the School Education, additional sub committees were also formed. Smti Daisy was chosen the Secretary of the Mother’s Committee, whereas Shri Manuah was given the responsibility of the Secretary of the School Building Maintenance Committee.

Addressing the Parents the Vice Principal of the School Shri P. Abdul Rehman said that the results of the class XII in the last session was better than the previous years. Talking about the other issues he said that the absenteeism is a big problem. He requested the parents to cooperate the School management in tackling this issue. He said that Extra coaching classes are being conducted after the school hours and the parents should encourage their children to attend it. Shri Rehman informed that the Mid Meal scheme has been implemented effectively and strict monitoring is being done to check the quality of the food.

The Secretary of the Tribal Council, Shri Martin Luther informed that the Special Coaching facilities for IAS is being started at Port Blair for the Tribal students and the students should avail this opportunity. He asked the students to be disciplined and focused to their studies.

The Local Senior Doctor Shri Anwar Moosa called upon the parents to encourage their children to work hard in the studies. He said that the Education is the tool which will take them to success. Appreciating the achievements of the students in the field of Sports Dr. Anwar said that they can get success in Studies too, if they are determined.
