Government trucks arrived last night to evict Bushmen from their ancestral land in southern Botswana, according to reports received by Survival International.

The move to evict the Ranyane Bushmen comes despite an injunction issued by Botswana’s High Court last week preventing the forced removal of some of the Bushmen until the case returns to court on June 18, and despite promises from President Khama’s spokesman Jeff Ramsay last week that ‘The government has no plans to remove those who wish to stay at Ranyane’.

The community has been threatened repeatedly with eviction by local authorities to make way for a ‘wildlife corridor’, a project which was pushed by American organization Conservation International for many years.

The Bushmen were told they were blocking the free movement of animals, and if they refused to leave, government trucks would arrive to remove them and destroy their houses.

But the Bushmen pose no threat to wildlife, alongside which they have lived sustainably for centuries, and many believe the eviction is in fact to benefit local cattle ranchers.

Bushmen from Ranyane told Survival that they do not want to leave the land which they have inhabited for generations.

Forcing tribal peoples off their ancestral lands has devastating consequences for their health, livelihoods and self-sufficiency.

Many Bushmen evicted from their land now inhabit so-called ‘resettlement camps’, where they depend on government handouts and frequently suffer from alcoholism, depression and other illnesses.

Survival’s Director Stephen Corry said today, ‘Officials claim the Bushmen must be moved in the name of conservation. So why have they made no effort to remove local cattle ranchers from the area? These evictions are rooted in prejudice and racism – the government seems to have one rule for the rich and powerful, and another for the Bushmen. Why can’t they just leave the Ranyane Bushmen in peace?’

Survival calls on the Botswana government to immediately stop the illegal eviction of the Ranyane Bushmen, which violates international law.

Port Blair, June 6: The Member of Parliament Shri Bishnu Pada Ray has strongly objected the move of the Directorate of Education to curtail the posts. Talking to the media, Ray said that the Directorate is trying to Re-allocate 350 posts to the other Islands, giving reasons that these posts are surplus at Port Blair. If this happens, 350 no. of posts would be curtailed, which would be very unfortunate thing. He said that there are hundreds of qualified un-employed youths who are waiting for a call of employment. But the employment crises would increase if the posts are curtailed. He said that the Administration should try to fill up the existing vacancies or create new ones to address this problem of un-employment.

On the issue of the Transfer Policy, the MP said the department should frame a transparent transfer Policy. Appreciating the policy adopted by the Police department, he said that the police employees are transferred for a period of 10 months only in hard areas like Nicobars, which is very psychological. On the other hand the teachers in the Education department are posted for an indefinite period. The uncertainty brings stress and trauma among the teachers who are given the serious responsibility of making good citizens. He has asked the Administration to confine the transfer tenure for one academic session. In his letter, he also referred the assurance of the Lt. Governor given recently in a meeting of representatives of the Teacher’s Association, in which he told that the tenure should not be more than one session in hard areas like Nicobar.

Expressing his unhappiness over the poor results in class XII this year, the MP said that the head of the department should take the moral responsibility of this dismal performance. He said the department is spending Crores of Rupees in the name of improving quality of Education, every year, but could not produce the expected results.

The MP reiterated his demand to constitute an advisory committee comprising the eminent retired Educationists who can guide the department to bring quality in Education in real sense.

Port Blair, June 6: The Andaman & Nicobar Administration has floated a Vacancy Notice for recruitment of LGC under the Administration on 4th June 2013. According to the notice an open competitive examination for filling up of about 146 vacancies under different categories will be held on 15th September this year with assistance of Staff Selection Commission, New Delhi.

The initiative of the administration towards filling up of vacant LGC posts is certainly welcome. But the move of inviting application from eligible candidates only by online registration through website seems not justified.

Everyone is aware that the BSNL network, which is providing the internet service in the Islands is not only slow but also unpredictable. Even the capital Port Blair city, is experiencing bad connectivity problem. If this is the situation, one can imagine the condition of internet connectivity in distant part of the territory.

In fact the islands are widely scattered and not all villages have the internet facility in the islands. Even if the network is available the connectivity is unreliable.

Under these conditions the online registration through website cannot be agreed as a judicious approach. Post offices are the most convenient and accessible means for sending of application forms for eligible candidates residing in far off villages.

Explaining the above scenario, Shri Bishnu Pada Ray, MP, A & N Islands has written a letter to Chief Secretary, A & N Administration suggesting review of the proposed online registration system. He has requested for keeping the option open for submission of applications by candidates through posts.
