Port Blair, May 31: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) observed its Foundation Day on 30th May 2013 at Tiranga Park. A Mass Dharna was held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. which culminated in massive public meeting at Tiranga Park. 

Addressing the meeting,  Shri B. Chandrachoodan, General Secretary, CITU A&N State Committee  criticized the Central government for pursuing various anti-working class policies  and dealt in detail the  struggles conducted by the Centre Of Indian Trade Unions since 1991.  

Speaking on the occasion, Shri T.S. Sreekumar, Assistant General Secretary, Non-Gazetted Govt. Officers’ Association said that  it is for the first time that all the central trade unions in the country have come together  to  voice their protest against the wrong policies of the government, which affects all sections of the working people.  He said that the central government is slowly moving towards complete privatization.

The issues raised during the CITU foundation day included (1) Take concrete measures to contain Price rise,  (2) Ensure strict enforcement of all basic labour laws without any exception or exemption and stringent punitive measures for violation of labour laws, (3) Universal social security cover for the unorganised sector workers without any restriction and creation of a National Social Security Fund with adequate resources in line with the recommendation of NCEUS and Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour, (4) Payment of wages and benefits to the contract workers at the same rate as available to the regular workers of the industry /establishment (5) Amendment of Minimum Wages Act to ensure universal coverage irrespective of the schedules and fixation of statutory minimum wage at not less than Rs.10,000/.

Port Blair, May 31: The Member of Parliament Shri. Bishnu Pada Ray has condoled the death of Shri. K.V. Mathew, aged 73 years, R/o Wimberlygunj, who passed away on 30.5.2013. In his message to his son Mr. Saji K. Mathew, PGT, Shri Ray prays to the almighty to give strength to the bereaved family to bear the irreparable loss. May his soul rest in peace.

Port Blair, May 29: The news flashed in the national media regarding probability of Port Blair being the base for American Drones had sent shivers down the spine, with the islanders fearing the adverse.

According to the news report carried in the national media, a new Pentagon-commissioned report seeks to turn Port Blair city it into something radically different: a base for American drones. In possibly the first reference to the use of Indian territory for the US military in recent times, the paper, put together by the RAND Corporation, suggests that the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands could be ideally suited as a base for American drones in the event of an offensive against China.

The paper, titled 'Overseas Basing of US Military Forces', was commissioned by the Pentagon on the instructions of the US Congress and looks into the presence of the American military at various bases and locations across the globe.

Commenting on the report carried in the national media, the Commander In Chief of the Andaman & Nicobar Command Air Marshal PK Roy, AVSM, VSM today said, “It’s a study done by an American think tank. I can assure you that there is no such thought process, no MOU and I can also assure you that there are no foreign poachers in our islands”.

“These articles keep coming. It’s like you and me trying to discuss Southeast Asia. It’s a study done by them and is no way connected to us, I can guarantee” assured the CINCAN.

Data of CBSE Results For A&N Finally Released

Port Blair, May 29: The results of All India Secondary School Examination (Class X) and All India Senior School Certificate Examination (Class-XII) 2012-13 have been announced by CBSE on 27th May, 2013. Though results are officially awaited from the CBSE, as per the results downloaded from the website of CBSE, out of 5032 students who appeared in Class-XII from the Govt. School/ Govt. Aided and Un-Aided Schools in A & N Islands, 3483 students have passed and 994 students have been placed in compartment. The overall pass percentage of class XII of A & N Islands stands at 69.22%. Four Schools have secured 100% result.

As per the results downloaded, from the website of CBSE in respect of class X of Andaman & Nicobar, out of 6717 No. students who appeared from A & N Islands, 6614 students have been declared Eligible for Qualifying Certificate and 103 students have been placed Eligible for Improvement (EIOP). The overall pass percentage of candidates in class X is 98.47.

A total of 70 students have been awarded with 10.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

55 Schools of A & N Islands have achieved 100% results in class X of which 42 schools are of UT Administration.

The above results are provisional and are subject to change on receipt of official Gazette.

Port Blair, May 29: On the issue of No Objection Certificate given by the Andaman Nicobar Command to the Andaman Administration to develop strategically located Viper Island into a tourist hub by leasing out portions of the land to a foreign company, the Commander In Chief, ANC Air Marshal PK Roy, AVSM, VSM today said, “The Defence Ministry has carried out an assessment and based on the assessment, the NOC has been revoked. If you look at the development post NOC, the earlier NOC was also a conditional NOC”.
