Port Blair, Dec. 20: As part of Navy Week activities, a cancer screening and preventive medical camp was organised on 16th Dec 2012 at INHS Dhanvantari for families of Service personnel of Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. The camp was inaugurated by Mrs. Rama Pillai, Vice President, Defence Wives Welfare Association, Andaman and Nicobar Region.

Surgeon Captain RJ Singh, Commanding Officer, INHS Dhanvantari addressing the gathering on the occasion emphasized the need for ensuring consistent and the best preventive health care for the families of men in uniform, who selflessly guard our frontiers.

An interactive lecture on breast and cervical cancer was delivered by Surgeon Commander AK Pillai, a senior eminent Gynecologist of Indian Navy. Various health concerns of women of different age groups were discussed during the session.

The camp was conducted at OPD Complex, INHS Dhanvantari. A team of doctors from INHS Dhanvantari consisting of specialists and general medical officers conducted the day long camp. Screening facilities for breast and gynecological cancer with facilities for USG examination, Pap Smear etc. were arranged during the camp.

INHS Dhanvantari conducts the cancer screening camp every year as part of health promotion and positive health campaign at the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Such camps help in early detection of cancers of breast, cervix etc which account for a large number of fatal cancers in Indian women which can be prevented by timely detection and appropriate treatment.
