Port Blair, Dec. 27: Three training programmes on Rodent management were organized by All India Network Project on Rodent Control and Out Reach Centre of Central Agricultural Research Institute supported by NABARD, Port Blair at R. K. Gram, Milan Gram and Madhupur of North Andaman during 23rd to 25th December, 2012 to sensitize the paddy farmers. The programmes were inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Gram Pradhan of each village.

Dr. Ajanta Birah, Principal Investigator, All India Network Project on Rodent Control and Senior Scientist of CARI explained about methods of rat management including bund trimming and weed free cultivation to minimise rodent menace, employment of indigenous trap and in high infestation area application of rodenticide etc. 

Mr. K. Sakthivel, Scientist of CARI gave a brief introduction about the role of rodents in island agriculture. The practical demonstration of rodent bait preparation and its use was also done. Altogether, 40 farmers of R. K. Gram (30 male and 10 females), 34 of Milan Gram (32 male and 2 female) and 55 of Madhu Pur (30 male and 25 female) participated in three training programmes and interacted with the Scientists of CARI.  Mr. S. Prashant and Mr. Sudhanshu Halder, Agriculture Assistants, from Department of Agriculture also participated in the trainings.

The training programme was organized under the plan and guidance of Dr. S. Dam Roy, Director, CARI and Dr. S. K. Zamir Ahmed, Coordinator, ORC, Diglipur. Gram Pradhans of all the three villages also appreciated the efforts of Director, CARI for organizing the training programmes in three clusters of villages as a follow up of the demand of paddy farmers on Rodent Management of the area.

Mr. Shiv Kumar, Technical Assistant, ORC welcomed the gathering while Mr. V. Harish, SRF proposed the vote of thanks.
