Port Blair, Jan 16: Andaman Nicobar Command (ANC) celebrated Army Day on 15th January 2019. 15th January is celebrated every year as Army day to commemorate the taking over of the Indian Army from General Sir Francis Butcher, the last British Commander in Chief of India by Lt Gen KM Cariappa (Later Field Marshal) as the first Indian Commander in Chief of the Indian Army, in 1949.

On the occasion, Brigadier Gaurav Gautam, Army Component Commander laid a wreath at Bayonet Chowk war memorial and all the Army units of the Command attended Sainik Sammelan held at Military Station Birchgunj. Vice Admiral Bimal Verma, AVSM, ADC, the Commander-in-Chief Andaman and Nicobar Command (CINCAN) congratulated and wished a very happy Army Day to all Army personnel of the Command.

Remembering the supreme sacrifice made by gallant soldiers of the Army in the service of the nation, the CINCAN said that the personnel of the Command have always been at the forefront when dealing with the security of Islands and providing assistance to the Andaman & Nicobar administration during emergent requirements like Disaster Relief and Humanitarian Aid.         

As part of the celebrations, ANC has planned to organise various events that include environment drive, blood donation and wellness camp. A Swachhta programme will be organised, in which all the army personnel and their families will participate, for cleaning the beach from Nariyal Bageecha to Chidiya Tapu on 17th January 2019. The men in olive green will also plant 350 tree saplings to spread the message of environmental conservation among the locals and tourists in the area. 

With the aim of promoting good health in the society, a Blood Donation and Wellness Camp will also be organised by the Army Wives Welfare Association AWWA (Port Blair) at Birchgunj on 17th January 2019 in coordination with a team of doctors from INHS, Dhanvantari and GB Pant Hospital, Port Blair. The camp with its theme ‘Swasth Pariwar Swasth Samaj’ primarily focuses on the overall health of families & their wards and will educate them about various aspects of health.
