Port Blair, Aug 8: On 14th August, Shri Dependra Pathak, IPS, Director General of Police, A&N Islands paid a visit to Police Training School, Prothrapur and interacted with young Recruit Police Constables undergoing basic training. He delivered an interactive talk on the subject “Policing in Present Times”. Shri Sanjay Kumar, IPS, Inspector General of Police, A&N Islands, all Superintendents, Deputy Superintendents of Police, SHOs of South Andaman area and faculty of Police Training School also attended the programme.

The session began with the welcome address by the Principal, Police Training School, Smt. Usha Rangnani, IPS. She highlighted the role of police in the present times in view of growing expectation of citizens in a vibrant democracy.

Addressing the gathering, the Director General of Police, A&N Islands, said that every Policeman is a civilian in uniform and is expected to work with the community and civil society in such a manner so as to create confidence in the mind of law abiding citizens and fear in the mind of mischief mongers and law breakers. He further said that every policeman has to be polite yet firm in his action and deeds.

He also sensitized police personnel regarding strategic importance of Andaman & Nicobar Islands and role of police in addressing the security and vulnerability of Islands to threats like poaching, possible infiltration, terrorism and other illegal activities. He also emphasized on the need for maintaining sound mental & physical health and fitness and to ensure good turnout by all police personnel.

He also advised police personnel regarding the need for life skill management, encompassing sound emotional balance, family and work life balance, financial management and time management. He also highlighted the changing paradigm and new contours of policing, requiring professional competency, ethical conduct, responsible behaviour, ability to distinguish between right and wrong, respect of Human Rights, a strong sense of service to the people, proficiency in handling modern weapons and anti-terror measures, as well as the need to keep oneself update with latest technological developments.

He motivated young recruits to concentrate on their training and to gain knowledge on laws & to keep themselves abreast of latest amendments in various laws and procedures, so as to effectively prepare themselves for field duties.  He also warned the young recruits against ill habit of alcoholism.  He advised the trainees to learn all the skills and techniques of investigation and policing so that they become confident and strong. He also advised them to prepare themselves to face the difficulties and remain cheerful in all circumstances. 

The session was highly engaging and interactive, where young trainees and other participants found answers to their many queries and gained an enriching experience. It ended with a vote of thanks by Shri Michael Raj, DANIPS, Vice Principal, Police Training School.
