Port Blair, Oct. 17: To commemorate the 88th Birth Anniversary of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the Lions Club of Port Blair in association with the Department of Home Science, JNRM and Andaman College (ANCOL) organised a massive tree sapling drive on 15th October 2019 at ANCOL.

Addressing the gathering Ms. Jochibed Vincent, Principal i/c, ANCOL thanked the Lions Club of Port Blair and Home Science Department for coming forward to organize sapling drive in ANCOL.

MJF. Lion. S. Subramanian, District Chairperson interacted with the NSS Volunteers and  informed that one should have the social responsibility for serving the nation. 

The programme was attended by MJF. Lion. G. Soma Sundaram, District Chairperson who asked the students to take up the values given by Dr. Kalam. He said that everyone should plant atleast five trees in their areas and grow them.

This was presided over by President Lion. S. Karuppusamy who exhorted the students to save the nature and mother earth by planting and growing more number of trees.

MJF Lion. A. Thiruchelvam, Secretary, highlighted to need of aforestation and natural resource management with special reference to Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Lion. P.Anbarasan, Treasurer underscored Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam’s quest for tree plantation and expressed his happiness that Lions Club is following his footstep through undertaking eco friendly activities in these islands. 

This sapling drive was organised by Dr. K. Venkatesan, HoD, Home Science, JNRM, Dr. N. Lakshmi, Assistant Professor (ANCOL) and Mr. Shastri, Assistant Professor (ANCOL). Around 25 members of Lions Club of Port Blair and NSS volunteers took part in the tree plantation drive.
