Port Blair, Oct. 31: The Chairperson, A&N Social Welfare Board,Dr. (Smti) Poonam Arora along with Board Members conducted an extensive tour to North & Middle Andaman from 24th – 27th Oct. 2016. During the tour, the Chairperson conducted various awareness meetings to explain the schemes for the upliftment of the economically weaker sections of the society at Rangat, RRO Village (Padmanabhapuram), Billiground, Pahalgaon, Mayabunder, Diglipur, Kadamtala and Baratang. She emphasised the need of formulating Mahila Mandals at all villages so that the difficulties being faced by the women can be well presented and suitable remedial action can be taken.

Further forming of Mahila Mandals will ensure that various social welfare schemes can be fully utilized by the women folk of the villages. The ill effect of tobacco and the necessity to ban the tobacco products was also explained to the villagers in detail.

In Rangat more than 150 women participated in the awareness camp. The camp was organised with the assistance of the Sarpanch, Smti Lakshi Doho, Pradhan of the area who is also a SWB Board Member and Shri Saw Tato, Adhyaksh, Zilla Parishad. The camp was also attended by the Mahila Mandal representatives, SHG Members and Local Panchayats. The increase in the number of Cancer cases particularly amongst the women (Breast cancer etc) was also a great concern and explained the necessity for early detection of cancer cases. The detection of cancer at the initial stage and its treatment can cure the disease completely.

The villagers of Shivapuram, Padmanabhapuram, Duknagar, Panchavati, Tiruvanjikulam and Mayabunder expressed their interest to run Balwadi (Creche). The villagers requested for Skill development training for Beautician Course, Day Care Centre, tailoring and financial assistance (Soft Loans) for fishing storage & selling which the Chairperson agreed to examine the feasibility of extending all support. 

The difficulties in getting the handicapped certificate by the villagers of Pahalgaon Panchayat, Buda Nallah was also brought to her notice. She requested the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) of Social Welfare Department to take necessary action to assist those who are not in a position to appear before the Medical Board for issue of handicapped certificate.
