ANACS Felicitates Regular Blood Donors

Port Blair, June 14: World Blood Donor Day 2020 was observed today at the GB Pant Hospital in the blood bank (blood centre) arena.

A brief programme was organized to honor the devoted and committed voluntary blood donors. The programme was arranged by maintaining all the protocols of COVID-19 scenario.

On the occasion, the Andaman & Nicobar AIDS Control Society (ANACS), which looks after the blood safety and conduct of blood donation camps took the effort to recognize and honour the donors who have donated 50 times and above in their life time. Such donors from A&N Islands include: Dr. Satyam Setia who donated 80 times, Mr. PA Rasheed who donated 71 times, Mr Saran Singh who donated 60 times and Mr. Manjit Singh 50 times.

Among the others who were honoured by the ANACS include Mr. Anjush Banik and Mr Russel Rose who have donate 25 times in their lifetime. Mr. Biplab Bachar, Mr. Abdul Majeed and Mr. Ratheesh have donated more than 20 times in their lifetime.

All such donors were honoured with shawls of honour and certificates of recognition.

The meeting was graced by Dr. Omkar Singh, Director of Health Services as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering the Director appreciated and thanked all the dedicated voluntary blood donors for their dedicated contributions even during the difficult times.

Earlier Dr. M Joy, Project Director, ANACS welcomed the gathering and exhorted people to come forth fearlessly to donate blood. He thanked all the donors who have been contributing immensely during the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown period that followed.

“It’s a great achievement for the blood bank that it never went dry because almost every day 20-25 units of blood was being collected during the lockdown”, said Dr Joy.

A total of 37 units of blood was collected during today’s camp which includes contributions from ANTA, Police Personnel, Fishermen Welfare Society, Youth Congress and other individuals.

The highlight of today’s blood donation camp was the entire family of Mr. PA Rasheed (71 times donor) who have been regularly donating blood together, with an aim to save lives of the needy.
