Field Day and Awareness Programme on Fodder Production Organised at ICAR-CIARI

Port Blair, July 19: ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair has organized Field day and awareness programme on fodder production on 18th July, 2020 under National Academy of Science, India (NASI) Programme. A total of 8 Nicobari rural youths and farmers from Nicobar group of islands and 2 farmers from South Andaman District were trained through filed visits, lectures, practical demonstration and hands on training on fodder production at the Division of animal Sciences.

The function was attended by scientists, project staffs and officers of the institute. Dr. B. A. Jerard, Director, ICAR-CIARI blessed the occasion and participants with tele-address and congratulated the Scientists of Animal science Division for conducting the field day on fodder production.

The chief guest of the programme, Dr A. Kundu, HoD, Animal Science Division ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair during his address emphasised on importance of fodder to fight the feed scarcity of islands at the present scenario. He appreciated the overall design of the programme and conduction of the knowledge and skills in trainees about fodder production.

The Course Director, Dr. P.A. Bala of Animal Science Division, stated different strategies of fodder production and demonstrated how to plant and propagate the fodders in different climate and topography. Dr. Jai Sunder. Pr. Scientist enlightened the participants with importance of balanced nutrition for livestock and how the Nicobari tribal farmers can use the opportunities in their favour. Dr. R.R. Alyethodi, Scientist and Dr. T. Subramani, Sr Scientist made the field demonstration and assisted in hands on training of the farmers. Shri. Derick, Farm Manager communicated well with the Nicobari farmers to understand the technical knowhow of the fodder cultivation in the islands. Shri Abbubaker and Shri. R.N. Tiwari assisted the demonstration of fodder cultivation and distribution of inputs to the farmers. On the occasion, approximately 200 cuttings of Hybrid napier ( Co-5), fodder bean seeds ( 250 g) and mineral  mixture supplements were also given to the farmers.
