People Throng at Petrol Bunks to Fill Fuel With No Clarity on Implementation of Lockdown by ANI Administration

Port Blair, July 28: With the unpredictable approach of the Andaman & Nicobar Administration and the ever rising number of COVID-19 positive cases in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, there is a panic created among the islanders. The reason being a sudden decision to close down the Liquor Vending Shops overnight, by the District Magistrate, South Andaman yesterday and the uncontrollable number of cases getting recorded day by day.

Upon being asked the reason for standing in the queue for hours together to fill fuel, one of the islander’s said, “We can have faith on the Almighty but cannot rely on the Andaman & Nicobar Administration. Who knows when they will announce a lockdown”?

People have also started stocking essential commodities considering the unpredictable approach of the present Administration. “I do not want my family to starve if the lockdown is pronounced”, said another islander, when asked. There are many such who are worried about the unknown that lies ahead.

The rising number of COVID-19 cases in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands has also created a situation wherein there is a shortage in the number of isolation beds available with the Administration to cater to the patients. Many of the patients have been asked to opt for Home Isolation, which has become all the more scary. People are worried now as to whether they will be getting the right medicines on time to recover. Moreover the first death of a COVID-19 positive case has added to the situation.

“Offices are getting sealed and Courts are being closed. I really wonder if the GB Pant Hospital will be closed for regular patients”, expressed a law abiding senior citizen, who has his roots in the islands since pre independence. “I am really surprised at the kind of secrecy maintained by the Administration while taking decisions for the islanders. Aren’t they posed for the betterment of the islanders? It’s a catastrophe for the islanders not because of COVID-19 but because of the unsympathetic behaviour of the officials”, the old eyes stared as the feeble voice spoke.

With the kind of situation prevailing in the islands, it can be hoped that the Andaman & Nicobar Administration starts considering a sympathetic approach with transparency in order to avoid uncalled-for panic.
