Port Blair, Sept. 30: Continuing on the zero tolerance policy on the organized crime, district police of North & Middle Andaman carried out a crackdown on the manufacturing and sale of illicit liquor. Based on information that due to the fear of action by the police, some people are making 'jungli' liquor in the nearby forest, search teams were deputed. Thousands of litres of the concoction stored for fermentation was destroyed in these search operations. PS Kalighat and PS Rangat have done particularly well in this.
Action was also taken on the illegal sale of liquor, which was particularly necessary as the ANIIDCO wine shop was closed in the district for some days and the bars are also closed. In the month of September itself, 32 cases under Excise Regulation have been registered in the district, with a seizure of 392 bottles of IMFL of various quantities, 14 ltr. Illicit liquor and 19 Kgs. of 'Handia' has been seized.
Strict action by the district police on any information given by the public is winning the trust of the people and they are coming forward to share the information with police, though most of them prefer that their names be kept secret.
