Role of Police, Parents, Teachers, NGOs, Social Welfare etc. Cannot be Ignored

Port Blair, Jan 18: As part of Police Raising Week from 16th to 23rd January 2021, South Andaman District Police organized a Panel discussion at JNRM Auditorium, Port Blair on 18/01/2021 at 1100 hrs, on the topic “Prevention of Drug Abuse”. The panel discussion was chaired by Shri Ravi Kumar Singh, IPS, Superintendent of Police, South Andaman District.

During the discussion, several aspects of drug abuse and its prevalence in Andaman & Nicobar Islands were discussed. Members emphasized on the need for rehabilitation of the victims and the need for change in perception of seeing the drug addicts as victims of larger socio-economic problems rather than outliers and wayward. SP, South Andaman along with Senior Public Prosecutor discussed in detail about how Andaman Nicobar Police is tackling the menace of drug abuse in the Islands.

In the end, the panel concluded that the role of Police along with Parents, teachers, NGOs, Social Welfare Department, etc. cannot be ignored and that drug abuse is a grave problem in the society and all stake holders of the society have to come together to eliminate this menace.

The other members of the panel were Shri Krishna Rao, Senior Public Prosecutor (District & Session Court), Shri Dev Raj Singh (Faculty, ANCOL), Shri Prem (Social Welfare), Dr Satish (Faculty, Andaman Law College) and Ms. Marye Sheela (NGO, Prayas). Dr. Santosh Kumar Jha (Faculty, JNRM) moderated the discussion.
