Port Blair, Jan 29: The officials of Food Safety Department conducted surprise visit and inspection of slaughter houses, mutton stalls and chicken stalls in and around Port Blair. During the inspections approximately 20 kgs of illegally slaughtered mutton was seized from a mutton vendor of mohanpura mutton market. Case has been registered against the mutton vendor under the provision of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, Rules and Regulation made thereunder. 

With the help of formalin and ammonia testing field kits 122 nos. of fish samples were tested at Junglighat and Bathu Basthi fish markets to detect the presence of chemical preservatives. All the samples were found free from ammonia and formalin.

The Commissioner Food Safety/Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman District has warned the mutton vendors to refrain from slaughtering of animals without carrying out ante-mortem and post mortem examinations by authorized Veterinary Surgeon.
