Tribal Council Demand Immediate and Stern Action Against the Accused

Port Blair, Feb 19: A Girl belonging to tribal community of Teressa was allegedly raped and made pregnant by a non-tribal man named Ravi working in a private firm in the Island. This horrible incident has shocked the tribals of Teressa, the Tribal Council now demanding a stern action against the accused.

The victim is a student of 12th Standard from Lakshi. Ravi, the accused is already married to a lady belonging to the tribal community of Teressa. The victim happens to be a relative of the accused’s wife and has been residing in their house for convenience purposes.

In a communication to Andaman Chronicle, the leaders of the Tribal Council of Teressa said that they demand from authorities that the accused be strictly punished and removed from their islands immediately.

The age of the girl is not yet clear so either it comes under POCSO Act or not has to be seen. Meanwhile, the District Child Protection Unit is also investigating into the case at the moment.

This horrible incident has widened the gap between tribals and non-tribals and highlights one of the few incidents, which haunt the tribal communities of the Nicobar Islands.
