Port Blair, March 10: The Govt. of India has been emphasizing for cleanliness in public areas throughout the Nation with the aim to create awareness amongst the general public and also to provide basic amenities for the same. It is well understood that no campaign of such massive nature can be carried out without the active participation of the people of the area.

The Directorate of RD, PRIs and ULBs, A& N Administration continuing its commitment to ensure “Zero Waste Andamans” carried out, a mass cleanliness drive at sea shore area in front of Surya Chakra Power House under Gram Panchayat Hope Town. This drive was carried out for three days by engaging manpower including the Sanitary Workers and Panchayat Staff of Gram Panchayat Hope Town and machinery to remove legacy waste of all form. Nearly 120 cbm of waste was removed from the sea shore area.

Considering the unique ecology of the islands, the Department is envisaging to ensure that zero waste goes to the landfill and that all wastes are properly treated and recycled.

The Directorate of Rural Development is fully committed in implementing Swachh Bharat Mission in these islands in letter and spirit. The Secretary (RD/Panch) exhorts the people of rural areas to come forward and support such cleanliness drives to achieve the status of Zero Waste Islands.
