Port Blair, July 1: The Regional News Unit (RNU) of All India Radio, Port Blair completed 46 years of prolific service to islanders today. The unit has been serving to inform, educate and update islanders since its inception in 1975, living up to its motto- “Bahujan Hitaya: Bahujan Sukhaya” which means “Welfare of mass: wellbeing of mass”.

The RNU started its journey on 1st July 1975 with an aim to provide all important information, in time, with utmost credibility, related with the daily life of common islanders. Since then the RNU is making islanders aware and educating them through news. Having a wide network spread across the whole islands from Diglipur in the north to Campbell Bay in the remote south, it keeps every islander updated. The locals are well aware of 'Pradeshik Samachar' and share a special bond with it. The FM has helped in reaching more and more people since its arrival. The news unit has proven its importance once again during the unprecedented time of COVID-19. The RNU had rendered its uninterrupted services especially during the lockdown. The AIR News has received an overwhelming response since the last one and half year amid Covid-19.

To mark the 46th Anniversary of its establishment, a small function was organised at All India Radio- Port Blair, wherein Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma, Member of Parliament was the Chief Guest.

The MP on the occasion appreciated the entire team of Regional News Unit, AIR- Port Blair for maintaining its credibility of news and information. Lauding team effort of All India Radio- Port Blair, Sharma said that it is the outcome of the team effort that News from RNU, AIR- Port Blair is able to reach every nuke & corner of island territory, which keeps the islanders updated of every development and happening. He also said that the islanders refer to Regional News of AIR- Port Blair for confirmation and authentication of any un-confirmed information or rumour.

Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma also distributed Sweets to staff of All India Radio- Port Blair and Doordarshan Kendra- Port Blair.

With changing times, efforts are also being made to reach globally using social media. News is being circulated through Twitter and whatsapp as well. AIR News Port Blair can also be accessed on twitter at @airnews_pb. The official handle has more than 6300 followers. Live Pradeshik Samachar can be heard on newsonair mobile app. Significant local stories from the islander used to be sent to AIR News, Delhi for national coverage. “We hope to achieve new standards in dissemination of information for all with the same credibility and commitment”, said the RNU Head.
