Port Blair, July 9: The Deputy Commissioner/District Programme Coordinator, South Andaman District, MGNREGA, South Andaman District, Shri Suneel Anchipaka, IAS today inaugurated the work C/o Katcha Road Shiv Mandir to Micale Suren Land at Hobdipur under Gram Panchayat Tushnabad in the presence of SDM (SA), AC(S)/ADPC, MGNREGA, Tehsildar Ferrargunj and Senior Programme Officer (BDO), MGNREGA, C.D Block Ferrargunj, ex-PRIs, MGNREGA officials and the MGNREGA beneficiaries (Villagers). The total estimated cost of the above said work is Rs.5,70,656/- with an estimated mandays of approx. 2010. It was a long pending demand of the villagers of the respective Gram Panchayat. The above said work will be benefit around 200 beneficiaries.

The District Programme Coordinator, MGNREGA/DC, South Andaman District interacted with the workers and appreciated the participation of women in the MGNREGA works. Few of beneficiaries interacted with the visiting officials and expressed their gratitude about MGNREGA, which has brought a significant change in their villages as well as in their lives, since employment is being provided to the unemployed persons within their village, further generating robust community assets.

The MGNREGA has turned to be a major source of employment to the rural population when all the other source of employment was halted. Beneficiaries are being provided employment as per their demand. In the time of pandemic, where most of the poor households are without any source of regular income, in such case the above said MGNREGA work may give some economic benefit & livelihood to the MGNREGA beneficiaries.

The District Programme Coordinator/DC (SA), directed that more works need to be taken up under MGNREGA in South Andaman District and also ensure that the works executed under MGNREGA should benefit maximum people in the locality & durable assets are also be created. Further he reiterated that the works should be carried out by following COVID -19 protocols.
