Port Blair, Dec. 7: In commemoration of Azadi ka Amrit Mahostav and as a part of Eat Right India initiative of FSSAI, the Food Safety Department is organizing a walkathon event on 12th December 2021. The walkathon shall start from National Memorial Cellular Jail at 7:00 AM and culminate at Netaji Stadium covering vintage points viz. Clock Tower, Annapurna Hotel, BSNL Office, IP&T Junction, DC Bunglow, Fire Brigade (HQ), Vikas Bhawan.

A Food Mela shall also be organized at Marina Park on the same day from 05:00 PM to 09:00 PM. Self Help Groups, Civil Societies, Government Departments, Associations of Food Business Operators and FBOs can display and sale their food articles through the stalls erected at the mela site.  These programmes are aimed to create awareness among the General Public about various Initiatives like Fit India, Consumption of fortified food, creation of Clean Street Food Hubs, Creation of Clean and Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Markets, Aaj se Thoda Cheeni our Namak Kam etc. under Eat Right India Campaign.

The FSSAI initiative aims at large-scale social and behavioral change by engaging consumers and educating them on eating right habits. It works on three major focus areas - Building Consumer Awareness, Addressing food Adulteration and enabling Healthy Choices.

For building consumer awareness, an approach has been adopted with programmes like Eat Right Campus and Eat Right School which targets individuals in Workplaces, Colleges, Universities, Institutes and Hospitals as well as at Schools. Further, the Eat Right Toolkit has been launched to reach communities at the grass-root level by training frontline health workers on messages of eating right.

The Commissioner Food Safety/ Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman District has invited all Islanders to  participate in the programmes and make it a huge success and spread messages of various initiatives of FSSAI.
