Port Blair, Jan. 27:  The Hon’ble Lt Governor, A&N Islands, Admiral D K Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM (Retd.) ordered the release of 13 life convicts on the occasion of Republic Day as part of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’. The release was ordered on the recommendation of Sentence Review Board headed by the Chief Secretary, A&N Administration, Shri Jitendra Narain. On this occasion, a small ceremony was organized at District Jail, Prothrapur. The ceremony was attended by the Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman, Shri Suneel Anchipaka, as chief guest. Secretary (PBMC), Shri Kishore Kshirsagar Lakshman, Inspector General (Prisons), Shri Rajeev Kumar, Superintendent Jail, Shri Radhey Shyam Meena and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

Inspector General (Prisons), Shri Rajeev Kumar in his welcome speech expressed his gratitude towards the Hon’ble Lt. Governor for his kind gesture and also assured the prisoners that Prison Administration is committed for their welfare and rehabilitation.

The Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman, Shri Suneel Anchipaka also advised the released inmates not to indulge in illegal activities outside and also assured them that District Administration will provide them all assistance so that they can become part of main stream society. The DC and Secretary (PBMC) also distributed kits to prisoners.

The function was also attended by the families of released prisoners and they also thanked the A&N Administration for this great step and prayed for long life of Hon’ble Lt Governor.

The function concluded with planting of saplings of fruit bearing trees in the Prison Complex.
