DPME Announces Schedule of Elections, Calls Upon People to Respect Model Code of Conduct

Port Blair, Feb. 3: As part of the ensuing General Elections to Panchayat and Municipal Council, a media briefing was held in the conference hall in the office of Director (Panchayat and Municipal Election) today.

Addressing the media persons present on the occasion, the DPME, Shri Suneel Anchipaka, IAS reminded the media persons about their role & responsibilities, said media plays an important role during elections. It not only creates voter’s awareness but also contributes towards maintaining peace during the entire election process.

About elections, the Deputy Commissioner stated that notifications will be issued for the General Elections to Panchayats & PBMC (except Gram Panchayat Netaji Nagar and Hut Bay) as per schedule appended below: -

Issue of notification for general elections by the Election Commission under rule 36 of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Panchayats) (Preparation of Electoral Rolls and Conduct of Elections) Rules, 1995: 04.02.2022 (Friday)

Last date for making nominations:               11.02.2022 (Friday)

Date for the scrutiny of nomination: 12.02.2022 (Saturday)

Last date for the withdrawal of candidatures: 14.02.2022 (Monday)

Date on which a poll shall, if necessary, be taken: 06.03.2022 (Sunday)

The date of Counting of Votes: 08.03.2022 (Tuesday)

Date before which the elections shall be completed: 11.03.2022 (Friday)

The polling will take place from 7am to 5PM.

About the preparations, the DPME, A & N Islands said ROs and AROs and Nodal Officers for elections have already been appointed for the smooth conduct of Elections. The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is already in force and the Police Department has been directed to make an assessment of the Sensitive and Vulnerable Poling Stations in A&N Islands.

The DPME, A & N Islands said that Control Room with Ph. Nos 230178, 23881, 240127, toll free no.1077 is functioning in DC Office wherein violations of MCC, if any, can be reported immediately for taking necessary action against the violators. He also urged the media persons to report the violations of MCC, if they come across, in these phone numbers for taking strict action against the violators.

The DPME, A & N Islands stated that ballot papers will be used for Panchayat Elections while EVMs will be used for Municipal elections. The total number of electors for Municipal Election is 1, 32, 965 and for Panchayats the number of electors are 1,64,975, he said adding that the UT Election Commission is in process for formulating COVID -19 guidelines which shall also be disseminated for information.

The DPME once again urged all concerned to observe the Model Code of Conduct scrupulously.
