Port Blair, July 4: A meeting of women of Wimberlygunj area was held at Wimberlygunj on 29th June 2022 in which a Village Committee of the All India Democratic Women’s Association was formed.  Addressing the meeting, Shri D. Ayyappan, Secretary, CPI (M), Andaman & Nicobar State Organising Committee explained in brief the difficulties being faced by women in these Islands due to the wrong policies of the central government and its Administration in the islands. 

Problems and demands of women are not being resolved in the absence of any mechanism like Women’s Commission in the Islands.  He said that it is the women who are bearing the brunt of price rise, job loss, unemployment, etc. in the islands. Smt D. Hemlatha, former Councillor and AIDWA leader also addressed the meeting and called upon the women to fight for their legal rights which are now being denied to them in all the spheres. Smt P. Shanthi, AIDWA State Organising Committee Member and Smt Lilly Gress also spoke on the occasion.

Meeting adopted resolutions on (i) to stop further opening of liquor bars and ANIIDCO wine shops in Wimberlygunj area (ii) to take stringent action on illegal sale of liquor in the area (iii) to take effective measures to control price rise, (iv) to create more job opportunities for rural women,  etc.
