Port Blair, Dec. 1: The Department of Home Science, JNRM, in association with the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Andaman & Nicobar Islands is organising a Two-Day Capacity Building Workshop on “Climate Change in Sustainable Development for School Teachers” from 1st to 2nd December 2022.
During the inauguration the Chief Guest, Ms.Veditha Reddy, IAS, Secretary (Education), Andaman & Nicobar Administration appreciated the Department of Home Science for bringing the teachers from various schools for this workshop. Ms. Reddy said India is among the countries most vulnerable to climate change. It has one of the highest densities of economic activity in the world, and very large numbers of poor people who rely on the natural resource base for their livelihoods, with a high dependence on rainfall.
The conservation of water, electricity and other resources is important at family level will give a community level change bringing transformation in the mindset of the people, she added.
She further highlighted that the teachers are the master trainer to the students and must exhort the children to utilise the resources in an optimal way. The learning through this workshop on saving the nature and environment will have the impact in the minds of young generation through teachers’ community for preserving the flora and fauna of these pristine islands, she opined.
The Guest of Honour, Shri.H.Manoj, General Manager, NABARD informed the gathering that this workshop is conceptualised in such a way that how the teachers can be the trainer to train the student for saving the nature and environment. He spoke on the rainfall pattern of the current year and also scenario of agriculture in the islands. There are two important ways through which we can tackle the climate change which is mitigation and adaptation.
He said that the consequences of climate change on the social systems are expected to vary in different regions of the world on account of several regional and other local factors. Further, there are many uncertainties in disaggregating the effects of global warming on different agro climatic regions due to still inadequate scientific understanding of the processes involved in the climate change, he added.
Dr. H.K. Sharma, Principal, JNRM spoke on the importance of tree plantation and its care through students at school and village level since the trees will give balance in the nature. Further he told different modeling studies, adaptation strategies and technology systems would be required for mitigation.
Dr. K. Venkatesan, HOD, Home Science and Convener of the programme spoke on the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) by outlining the existing and future policies and programs addressing climate mitigation and adaptation and welcomed the gathering.
Earlier Smt. Nidhi Shekhawat, Assistant Professor proposed vote of thanks. Smt.Poonam Ajay Singh, Resource Person, Department of Home Science moderated the entire programme and Dr Shilpa Kaushal, Resource Person Ms. P. Bhuvaneshwari, Resource Person were served as Rapporteur.
