Bakultala, Feb 2: On the invitation of the Principal GSSS Bakultala, Dr. B. Bindu Kumar, MO, CHC Rangat created awareness among students on the Theme "Internet Addiction - effects on the Physical, Mental, Social and Psychological Health of a Person" as part of "Cyber Jagrookta Awareness Diwas".

Internet / technology addiction is an increasingly prevalent problem that has a negative effects on the Physical, Mental, Social Health and Interpersonal relationships. Psychological research is seeing a growing trend of addictive online and technological devise dependence behavior in alarmingly large numbers of people from tiny tots to elderly people. This can have serious effects on the mental and emotional health of addicts, leaving them lonely, anxious, and depressed and prolonged screen time makes them irritable with aggressive behaviours etc besides problems at Physical dimensions - such as effects on eyes, hearing, nutritional deficiencies, lack of physical exercises, sleep disorders and increase in the Non-Communicable Diseases like High Blood Pressure, Type II Diabetes Melitus, Cardiovascular Disease, Stroke, alzheimer's disease, Parkinson disease, Cancers etc. Thus Addictions has unwanted repercussions in important parts of a person's life, such as work productivity and personal relationships.

Symptoms of internet addiction may include:

1) A preoccupation with the internet, even when not online.

2) A sudden and drastic increase in internet usage.

3) Difficulty cutting back or stopping internet usage.

Irritation, aggression, or restlessness caused by efforts to cut back on internet use.

4) Unstable moods when not online, or internet use as a way to cope with stress.

5) Internet use interferes with job duties or academic work.

6) Difficulty maintaining healthy relationships when not online.

7) Friends and family express concern for the amount of time spend online.

Dr. B. Bindu Kumar also explained to the students how and why one person gets into the technology / internet addition and the Role of various neuro transmitters like, Melatonin, Dopamine, Oxytocin, Seratonin and Endorphin in Health and Addiction and Disease and how one can remove addiction. He advised students to keep an addiction journal. "When using the internet, take a moment to write down how you feel in the moment. When you’re not using it, but are craving the internet, write down how you feel in that moment."

He also explained how to develop the Habit of Personal communication in the real world rather than in the virtual world, e.g. to get into natural hobbies, sports, cultural program, Yoga, Meditation and Hasya Yoga etc. He also gave a Hasya Yoga and Meditation session to make them experience how they feel after a smile, a laugh, Meditation and observation of breath when they feel anxious.

The awareness session will help the students start turning their life around, so that they can step away from the internet /. technology and improve their relationships in the real world.
