Port Blair, Feb 5: #Bageecha – an initiative of Andaman Chronicle to bring people closer to nature, on Saturday 4th Feb 2023 organised a story telling workshop titled ‘Ek Kahani’. The workshop was conducted by National Awardee Teacher, Shri Chanchal Singha Roy, who travelled all the way from Kadamtala in the Middle Andaman to Bageecha for the session.

The workshop saw a participation of more than 20 children from different parts of the city. Children were briefed about the need to protect and conserve their environment and were trained to be story tellers themselves. A folktale of the Nicobars was narrated by Shri Chanchal Singha Roy through which it was explained how trees used to communicate with humans. It’s the arrogance and greed of we humans that leads to devastation. Roy also expressed that it has been scientifically proven that plants grow healthy when we talk with them and play music for them.

Chanchal Singha Roy is also the founder of Coastal Green Zone and has been involved in educating children to make them understand about their environment and ecology, and the need to conserve them.

Ek Kahani also saw the participation of Smti Kamala, an organic spice seller of A&N Islands, who explained the children on the need to opt for organic food in order to stay healthy.

The workshop was the first programme conducted at Bageecha. More such programmes and exhibitions are being planned by Andaman Chronicle in the days to come.

At a time when we all talk and read about Climate Change, Biodiversity Conservation etc. Andaman Chronicle led by its Editor, Denis Giles took the initiative to start ‘Bageecha’, where people are inspired to adopt a plant as a member of their family and learn how to nurture them. Andaman Chronicle believes that by adopting plants, we are a step closer to nature and at the same time, a step in the right direction to do our bits to arrest issues like climate change.

Bageecha also displays and promotes produces of various stakeholders including SHGs and Startups.  It has a small nursery of fruiting, flowering and ornamental plants apart from Organic Pesticides, Vermicompost, Potting Soil, Plant Tonic and other locally produced items like pickles and mushrooms. The aim is also to promote local products while inspiring people to come closer to nature.
