Port Blair, March 25: The Andaman and Nicobar Islands Khadi and Village Industries Board and the Directorate of Industries, A& N Administration organized ‘Khadi Paridhan Utsav’ as part of celebration of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ at Andaman Club on Saturday 25th March. The Chairperson, PBMC, Smt. S Selvi as the chief guest garlanded the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi which marked the commencement of the event.

In her brief address, the Chairperson recalled how Khadi made its way into the hearts of every Indians during pre and post-Independence. She also informed about the Small Scale Industries engaged in making Khadi products and these products have become a means of livelihood to many rural artisans. She also witnessed the exhibition-cum-sales which was displayed in the hall, showcasing varieties of Khadi products including traditional Khadi wear, herbal products etc. A live demonstration of spinning of charkha also formed part of the event.

The Deputy Director, Industries Department, Shri James, and Assistant Conservator of Forest, Ms Meera Nambiar, graced the event as Special Guests.

The highlight of the event was the models attired in Khadi costume walked the ramp and flaunted the Khadi fashion for which the costume designing and choreography was done by Islands Women Cooperatives Society. Presentation of Ramdhun and other patriotic songs form part of the event which was enjoyed and appreciated by one and all present in the hall.

In her welcome address, Ms Meera Singh, Technical Assistant, KVIB informed that the programme has been organized by KVIB in order to create awareness among the Islanders on the importance of Khadi- a fascinating fabric for all seasons and all occasions.  Khadi, as we all know is the identity of our country which is the symbol of India's freedom struggle, she added.

The programme concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by the Assistant Director, Industries Department, Ms Sunita Kumari.
