Port Blair, July 7: The Chairman of Congress Campaign Committee Mr. TSG Bhasker has expressed his deep concern over the illegal disposal of plastic and non-biodegradable waste in Andaman & Nicobar Islands by few officers of PBMC, which is having a detrimental impact on the environment and causing pollution.

In a letter addressed to the Hon’ble Minister of Environment, Forest & Climate Change on Thursday, Mr. Bhasker highlighted the way in which plastic waste amounting to approximately 1 lakh ton have been camouflaged in the Municipal Dump Yard, Brookshabad and covered in earth.

Mr. Bhasker said that the Port Blair Municipal Council had earlier floated a tender for taking this plastic and bottle waste materials to mainland for proper disposal and crores of money were given to a private party for carrying out this work. But it is seen that the plastic & bottle waste materials are being disposed of in the earth and covered with mud on the direction of a few officers of PBMC to mask their theft of public money.

He emphasized that the area where the waste materials are being buried is close to the sea which shall cause ‘Environmental Degradation’ to our beautiful Islands.

He exhorted that Andaman & Nicobar Islands is a very deeply sensitive area from the ecological and geological perspective and anything that the Municipality does here has to be done with great care and sensitivity.

He added that the Ministry of Environment has already given clearance for cutting around 10 lakh trees from Great Nicobar Island for the Great Nicobar Island Development Project. Further adding to this, the dumping of 1 lakh ton garbage in the earth will prove to be a disaster for the ecosystem of Andaman & Nicobar Islands in the coming future.

He requested the Minister to take bold steps to protect the coastal and marine ecosystem of our Islands and to ensure sustainable development which will go a long way in addressing the issue of Environmental Degradation in A&N Islands.

He also requested the Minister to order an NGT investigation in this whole matter and also a CBI enquiry on the financial irregularities that happened so that the culprits can be caught and exemplary punishments can be meted out to them.
