Port Blair, July 9: Shri D. Ayyappan, Secretary, CPI (M) Andaman & Nicobar State Organising Committee recently met the new Chief Engineer of APWD and brought to his notice the deplorable condition urban and rural roads in Andaman & Nicobar Islands. He urged the Chief Engineer to frame some concrete proposals for re-laying of all the urban and rural roads by utilizing the latest technology with the technical assistance of Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), New Delhi.  

Ayyappan also brought to the notice of the Chief Engineer the poor state of General Pool Residential Accommodation Colonies in various parts of the islands.  He urged the Chief Engineer to evolve a General Pool Residential Accommodation Redevelopment Project and construct sufficient number of residential accommodation for government employees by demolishing the existing old government quarters. The Redevelopment Project should consist of residential accommodation, supporting social infrastructure and General Pool Office Accommodation.  

He also expressed concern over the fresh encroachments of APWD land by unscrupulous elements and the inaction on the part of APWD authorities.  He requested the Chief Engineer to protect the APWD land from further encroachments and to remove all the fresh encroachments on APWD land.  He urged the Chief Engineer to utilize the land where government quarters existed only for construction of new government accommodation.   

The Chief Engineer assured the CPI (M) leader that the suggestions will be looked into.
