CPI (M) Demands Introduction of PG Course in Economics at JNRM

Port Blair, Sept. 11: Communist Party of India (Marxist) has demanded introduction of Postgraduate Degree Course in Economics in JNRM, Port Blair for the benefit of the students of these islands.  In a letter sent to the Lt Governor, A & N Islands, D. Ayyappan, Secretary, CPI (M) A & N State Organising Committee said that there are three Arts & Science Colleges functioning in Andaman & Nicobar Islands for the last several decades. While the JNRM, Port Blair (formerly Government College, Port Blair) was established in the year 1967, the Mahatma Gandhi Government College, Mayabunder (originally established in Car Nicobar) was established in the year 1990 and the Andaman College, Port Blair was established in 2014, to cater to the requirements of the students of these islands.

Ayyappan pointed out that the JNRM, Port Blair is having the facility of Postgraduate studies in a number of subjects, but the authorities could not introduce MA in Economics in JNRM, Port Blair.  He brought to the notice of the Lt Governor that about 110 students are enrolled every year in JNRM, Port Blair in BA Economics, while MG Government College, Mayabunder and Andaman College, Port Blair, are admitting 60 students every year in BA (Economics). In this way, around 230 students in BA (Economics) pass out every year from the above three colleges. CPI (M) Secretary told the Lt Governor that there has been a long-pending demand from the students and parents to introduce Postgraduate Degree course in Economics (MA in Economics) in JNRM, Port Blair.     

Ayyappan further said that the JNRM, Port Blair is having sufficient number of qualified and experienced Faculty to teach MA (Economics) if the Postgraduate degree course in Economics is introduced.  He further brought to the notice of the Lt Governor that at present, students from A & N Islands are forced to study on the mainland Colleges for M.A (Economics) as the said course has not been opened in any of the colleges in these islands. CPI (M) Secretary urged upon the Lt Governor to take necessary steps to introduce Postgraduate degree in Economics (MA in Economics) in JNRM, Port Blair for the benefits of eligible and aspiring students of these islands.
