Car Nicobar, Nov. 8: The serene Islands of Car Nicobar witnessed a vibrant celebration of culture, community and entrepreneurship with the commencement of Carnic Festival -2024 inaugurated by the chief guest, Ms. Jyoti Kumari, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Nicobar District yesterday at Edward Kutchat Park, Perka Village, Car Nicobar. The guest of honour, Shri Sunny Gupta, IPS, Superintendent of Police, Nicobar District, HoDs and general public were also present on the occasion.
The three days long event starting from Nov.7, 2024 is being organized by the District Administration, Car Nicobar. The Carnic Festival 2024 is a celebration of the Islands indigenous culture, featuring a range of cultural performance, traditional music, and stalls by various line Departments of Car Nicobar.
Apart from this, a total of 11 SHGs under DAY- NRLM participated and displayed handmade crafts, food items, organic home grown vegetables and traditional Nicobarese delicacies. A total of 9 stalls were allotted to SHGs and this not only provided a platform for women SHG members to showcase their skill but also fostered economic empowerment and community development and opportunity for small business to sell their handmade products. Despite lack of proper staff strength for NRLM at CD Block, Car Nicobar, the SHGs from Sawai Village sold articles worth Rs. 12,350/- and least by SHGs from Big Lapathy Village being Rs. 3752/- on the first day of the Festival. The SHGs Mela aims to empower local communities specially women to showcase their talents and boost their economic independence.
To join in the celebration, villagers from all the villages of Car Nicobar visited the venue. The festival features enthralling cultural dances, captivating music and traditional dance of Nicobarese people, attracting participants and spectators from all walks of life. The event will culminate on Nov.9, 2024.
