Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov. 20: The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Government of India, has introduced a scheme titled “Compensation to Victims of Hit and Run Motor Accidents Scheme, 2022” vide notification No. G.S.R. 163(E) dated 25.02.2022. This scheme supersedes the earlier Solatium Scheme, 1989, and enhances the compensation payable to victims of hit-and-run motor accidents as follows:

 (i) ₹2,00,000/- in case of death

(ii) ₹50,000/- in case of grievous injury

To ensure effective implementation of the scheme across the Union Territory, District Level Committees have been constituted for all three districts under the chairmanship of the respective Deputy Commissioners.

The first meeting of the District Level Committee for South Andaman District was held on 20.11.2024, chaired by Shri Arjun Sharma, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman. During the meeting, the Chairman emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the scheme, as several victims or their legal representatives were unable to claim compensation due to a lack of knowledge about its provisions.

Victims or their legal representatives in hit-and-run cases can submit applications to the Tehsildar, Sri Vijaya Puram, who has been designated as the Claim Enquiry Officer for the South Andaman District. Concerned police stations will assist claimants in submitting their applications. The enquiry and approval process for claims will be conducted in a time-bound manner, and compensation amounts will be directly credited to claimants’ bank accounts by the General Insurance Council.

To facilitate the process, a special camp will be organized by the Tehsildar, Sri Vijaya Puram, on 30.11.2024 at 10:00 AM. Victims or their legal representatives involved in hit-and-run cases since 01.04.2022 are encouraged to attend the camp to avail of the scheme’s benefits.

General Public is also made aware of the fact that similar facility has also been established in the Districts of North and Middle Andaman and Nicobar under the chairmanship of the respective District Magistrates. The concerned Tehsildar or Assistant Commissioner has been notified as the Claim Enquiry Officer for these Districts.

Citizens are encouraged to spread awareness about this scheme to ensure that eligible victims or their families can avail of its benefits promptly.
