Religion, the one thing that should be most private in our lives, is bandied across as a political tool in our country, and as people are trapped, they find everything taken away from them in taxes, as they continue living in this ‘gilded cage’!
Here’s a simple story. Hope you see the parallel:
Once upon a time there lived a girl, Kamala, who felt that all her problems in life would be solved forever, if she married a rich man.
A rich man named Narayan, realising her weakness, invited her to his sprawling estate.
As soon as Kamala laid eyes on the grand estate, she knew she had to have it. The sprawling mansion, the manicured lawns, and the crystal-clear pool all sparkled like diamonds in the sunlight.
Despite their significant age difference and lack of emotional connection, Kamala agreed to marry Narayan for one reason: his vast fortune. She convinced herself that love would grow over time, and that the financial security he offered was worth the sacrifice.
At first, Kamala was living the high life. She spent her days lounging by the pool, shopping for designer clothes, and attending exclusive parties. But as time went on, she began to feel suffocated by the gilded cage that Narayan had built around her.
He controlled every aspect of her life, from the clothes she wore to the friends she kept. He was possessive and jealous, often accusing her of flirting with other men or plotting to leave him. Kamala felt like a prisoner in her own home, with Narayan holding the keys.
Despite her growing unhappiness, Kamala felt trapped. She had married Narayan for his money, and now she was dependent on him for everything. She had no career, no education, and no financial independence. She was a bird with clipped wings, unable to fly.
One day, Sophia discovered that Narayan’s wealth was not really his, but that he was propped up by a series of credit cards and huge loans he had taken, and Kamala realized she had made a terrible mistake. She didn't love Narayan, and she didn't want to spend the rest of her life trapped in a loveless marriage.
Though Narayan promised to put fifteen lakhs into her bank account within a year, Kamala realised that the only way to wealth and joy was not to build it through others but through her own self.
She started taking classes, got a part-time job, and began to rebuild her self-esteem. It wasn't easy, but because Kamala was determined to break free from the gilded cage and start anew, she succeeded.
She realised the only way was to divorce Narayan and start a new chapter in her life. She learned that true happiness and fulfilment comes from within and cannot be installed through outside help!
When will we Indians, like Kamala learn,
To stop being fooled, and to discern,
That we all can fly from our gilded cage,
When we realise we’re held, a willing hostage..!
