Port Blair, Sept. 13: Internationally renowned Padma Shri awardee scientist Dr Ajai Kumar Sonkar said that the production and consumption of plastic products and the amount of plastic debris are constantly increasing. He informed that Plastic fragments smaller than 5 mm are being found in all environments, and their detectable amount is 690,000 particles/kg and 155,000 particles/ liter in soil and freshwater environments, respectively. Common sources of microplastics in soil include plastic waste, polyethylene-based mulching vinyl used in agriculture, and friction of tire tread and shoe soles. This daily friction is generating a considerable amount of plastic particles, which cannot be ignored. Assuming that every person uses one shoe sole within two years, 2 grams of shoe sole fragments are entering the soil ecosystem annually.

Diglipur, Sept. 13: The Integrated Child Development Services Unit of the Social Welfare Department organized an awareness camp, highlighting the provisions under the acts enacted, safeguarding the women’s rights, at Model Senior Secondary School Sitanagar today. In the camp organized in different sessions, Adolescent girls were made aware about the provisions related to Domestic Violence Prohibition Act, Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act, and the provisions of strict legal actions against sexual harassment of women at the workplace.

Hut Bay, Sept. 13: Hope Foundation today organised its 4th awareness programme on suicide prevention at Govt. Model Sr. Sec. School, Hutbay. The initiative aimed to educate students and staff about mental health, the importance of emotional well-being, and how to seek help in times of crisis. The program featured expert talks like SDPO (Swaraj Dweep, Shaheed Dweep and Hutbay, Mr. Feroz Alam from Police Department who carried out a very important interactive session, and activities designed to encourage open discussions about mental health.

Port Blair, Sept. 13: The Ministry of Tourism, Government of India has launched a training programme under the flagship scheme ‘Paryatan Mitra, Paryatan Didi, and Swagatham’. As part of this, a three days training programme was organized from Sept.11 to 13, 2024 at Aapda Prabhandan Bhawan, Link Road in collaboration with the Tourism Department, A & N Administration and Office of India Tourism. The Institute of Hotel Management Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition, Kolkata was appointed as the training partner for this program, nominated by the Ministry of Tourism, GoI.
