March 3 (Reuters) - Denis Giles, the editor of a small Indian newspaper, received a phone call as he sat typing in his one-room office in Port Blair overlooking the languid waters of the Andaman Sea.

The caller, Mohammed Siddiqui, was frantic and largely incoherent. Giles said he was about to hang up until he heard, in broken Hindi: "Please help me... Many people may die."

Port Blair, March 3: The Directorate of RD, PRIs and ULBs, Andaman and Nicobar Administration with an aim to augment the infrastructure arrangements of the Gram Panchayats for effective carrying out of Door to Door segregated collection of waste in accordance to the Rural Areas Solid Waste Management Bye Laws, 2019 has procured 29 battery operated e-Carts from the World Bank Incentive Fund received from the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Govt. of India.

Port Blair, March 3: The entrance tests of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) towards admission into the MBA (Openmat), B.Ed, and Post Basic B.Sc (Nursing) programme, batch commencing January 2021 is scheduled for conduct on Sunday, 11th April, 2021. The registration for the entrance test will be on-line. 

Port Blair, March 3: Shri. Ajoy Bairagi, State President, Bharatiya Janata Party has congratulated Shri. Jitendra Narayan, IAS (AGMUT: 1990) on assuming the charge of Chief Secretary of Andaman and Nicobar Administration.

Bairagi wished Narayan the best for his future endeavours and has shown confidence in his leadership to lead Andaman and Nicobar Islands effectively and efficiently.  He said that the experience of Shri. Jitendra Narayan in Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the past will help him lead the Islands efficiently.

Port Blair, March 3: Due to sudden breakdown of vehicle ferry vessel MV Austin–IV providing ferry service between Uttara and Gandhi Ghat has been withdrawn from service for rectification of its defects. Presently only one vehicle Ferry vessel MV Austin–III is providing service at Kadamtala. All efforts are being made by this Directorate to rectify the defects and restore normalcy. The commuters are requested to plan their journey suitably.

Inconvenience caused in this regard is regretted.
