NGGOs A&N Islands Extend Support to the Ongoing Struggle by Defence Civilian Employees

Port Blair, July 8: The Non-Gazetted Govt. Officers’ Association, A & N Islands extends support to the ongoing struggles of Defence civilian employees against the decision of the Central Government for corporatisation of 41 ordnance factories. All the five federations of defence civilian employees including BPMS, a union affiliated to BMS, have been opposing this arbitrarily taken decision of the Government as it is another step towards total privatisation or closure of the prestigious ordnance industry in public sector. The Government has announced the decision on June 16 to splinter all the 41 ordnance factories under Ordnance Factories Board (OFB) to 7 non-viable corporations. The decision taken by the Government is in clear violation of the past written agreements and assurances given by the Ministry of Defence that Ordnance factories would not be corporatized. The Government also ignored the various alternative and robust proposals by the Federations to continue the Ordnance Factories under Government sector. Demanding review of the decision, all the five Federations of defence civilian employees have served notice to the authorities to strike work from 26th July,2021. Instead of a negotiated settlement, the Government has promulgated a draconian ordinance namely Essential Defence Service Ordinance 2021 (EDSO) to snatch away even the legal right to strike under Trade union act and Industrial dispute act.
