Port Blair, Nov. 12: The Port Blair Municipal Council has been awarded first prize in the national water award for ‘Best Urban Local Body’ category by Ministry of Jal Shakti, GoI for the water conservation campaign done under ‘Jal Shakti Abhiyan’

PBMC undertook various activities like creating awareness among general public and school students by conducting rallies, nukad natak’s, drawing, essay & quiz competitions.

Port Blair has a rich heritage of pre independence era. Japanese created wells in the islands with terracotta bricks & stone boulders; these wells were in poor conditions. PBMC took initiative to restore this heritage wells and brought to the use of general public.

Water bodies were cleaned by desilting & removing floating & other invasive aquatic Plant species. An initiative from ‘Jal Shakti Abhiyan’ success- -fully rejuvenated these water bodies.

One of the focus area of PBMC was to encourage people to install rain water harvesting system in their premises and installation of water meter & float valve to avoid wastage of water

This award is an endorsement of our efforts done towards water conservation.
