Port Blair, Sept. 18: The Directorate of RD, PRIs and ULBs, Andaman & Nicobar Administration held a meeting cum orientation programme with Heads of Departments of line departments, District, Block and GP level Officers/officials under the chairmanship of Ms. Veditha Reddy, IAS, Secretary (RD/Panchayat) to discuss and deliberate on the UT Action Plan for the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign. The programme was also attended by Elected Representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions.

Addressing on the occasion, the Secretary informed that the Ministry of Jal Shakti in collaboration with Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and Ministry of Rural Development, Govt. of India has launched an important campaign - Swachhata Hi Seva from 15th September to 2nd October, 2023. The theme for the campaign is “Garbage Free India.”

The Swachhata Hi Seva is reinforcing the concept of Sanitation as Everyone’s Business using whole of Government approach in all Rural & Urban areas of all States/UTs, with an objective of reinvigorating community participation i.e Jan Andolan towards Swachh Bharat Mission, emphasizing on Voluntarism i.e undertaking ‘Shramdaan’ and thereby disseminating the importance of Sampoorna Swachhata. The campaign involves participation of all stakeholders across all age groups with special focus on Children, youth, women, senior citizens, religious leaders, organizations at District level, NGOs etc.

Shri Mohammed Yunus M, SNO (SBM-G) gave an overview about the Swachhata Hi Sewa fortnight through a powerpoint presentation and also briefed about the activity schedule chalked out by the Directorate of RD, PRIs for the campaign at the District, Block & Gram Panchayat level.

During the meeting, the Secretary (RD/Panchayat) emphasized that the work on Swachhata should not be merely on paper, but it must have an impact in the people’s life. She directed the Heads of the Departments to actively participate in the programmes which have been scheduled for the fortnight and mentioned that the line departments has a crucial role to play. She also expressed that the senior officers of the Administration must be involved in Beach clean-up drives or any other activities in relation to the campaign.

The Heads of the Departments briefly explained their activity schedule and preparedness for the campaign.

Shri Dilkhush Meena, IAS, Secretary (PBMC) also briefed about the activities on-going & scheduled in the Municipal area such as house to house mobilization by SAT team & Sanitary Division team, Net & Plastic bottles barrier, establishment of waste depot, mega beach clean-up drive at Marina park & rally etc.

The Secretary (RD/Panchayat) exhorted for all stakeholders including NGOs, CSOs and general public to come forward and make the campaign a Jan Andolan in the right spirit.
