Port Blair, Sept. 19: The World Ozone Day, observed every year on September 16, is also known as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. The date was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 1994, commemorating the date in 1987 when nations signed the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. The need to declare an action to preserve the ozone layer came as a result of the outset of its depletion. This special day aims to draw attention of everyone on this planet towards the usefulness of ozone layer, how it protects us from UV rays and how we need to protect it from damaging chemicals. The theme of World Ozone Day 2023 is “Montreal Protocol: fixing the ozone layer and reducing climate change”. 

As a part of celebration, ZSI, Port Blair conducted online painting competition for School/College students, teachers, and researchers of this islands, and will be organizing a one-day seminar on 20th September 2023 dedicated to September 16 "International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer". About 100 students, teachers, and researchers are expected to attend the workshop.  The one-day seminar will be inaugurated by Prof. Gurmeet Singh, Vice Chancellor, Pondicherry University, Puducherry.  

Shri. Keshav Chandra, IAS, Chief Secretary will be a Chief Guest; and Shri. Devesh Chandra Srivastava, IPS will be the guest of honour in the valedictory function and distributing the certificate to the winners of the drawing competition.
