Port Blair, Sept. 25: The State-level General Body Meeting of the All India Democratic Women’s Association was held on 24.09.2023 at Shaheed Bhavan, Anarkali, Port Blair.  Inaugurating the Meeting, Smt Sudha Sundararaman, All India Vice President of AIDWA briefly explained the aims, objective and functioning of AIDWA in the country.  She said that ever since the BJP came to power at the Centre, attack on women is increasing.  Referring to the attack on women in Manipur, she said that   women were raped, paraded and brutally killed under the BJP regime.   She said that BJP government has been protecting those who sexually exploit the women and cited the example of Brij Bhushan Singh who exploited wrestlers but no action has been taken against him. AIDWA conducted country-wide agitation against both the Manipur attack and Wrestlers issue. 

She further said that BJP government has failed to arrest price rise in the country.  Referring to the recent reduction of Rs. 200 in the LPG price, Sudha Sundararaman said that when BJP came to power, the price of LPG cylinder was below Rs. 400.  The price of LPG cylinder in August, 2023 was Rs. 1200 per cylinder.    She said that unemployment, particularly among women, is rising in the country and the government not only failed to create new jobs in the country but also failed to protect the jobs of existing workers.  She criticized the BJP government for dividing the country on communal lines.  

D Ayyappan, Vice President, CITU State Committee while addressing the meeting said that problems faced by the women in the islands are increasing and there is no mechanism like State Women’s Commission in Andaman & Nicobar Islands for its redressal. SP Kalairajan, Secretary, CITU State Committee also addressed the gathering. 

Earlier, Kala Devi, Member, State Organising Committee, AIDWA welcomed the leaders and participants in the meeting.  C. Anandi, Convener, AIDWA State Organaising Committee presented a brief report on the activities of the AIDWA in the islands during the last one year.   The meeting discussed various issues and adopted resolutions relating to the women in the islands.  S. Chithra, Member SOC, AIDWA proposed vote of thanks.  A new State Organising Committee was also elected in the General Body meeting.
