India Ocean Wide Tsunami Communication Exercise to be Held on Oct. 4

Port Blair, Sept. 29: The International Coordination Group for the India Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (ICG/IOTWS) of UNESCO in coordination with Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, Hyderabad (INCOIS) will be conducting Indian Ocean Wide Tsunami Communication Exercise (IOWave23) on 4th October, 2023 in India and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands will also participate in this exercise. The Indian Tsunami Early Warning System (ITEWS) at the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad focuses primarily on monitoring and warning of Tsunamis in Indian Ocean.

This exercise will test the current procedures of the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System and help identify operational strengths and weaknesses in each state and country. The exercise is to test disaster management organization's communications protocols organizational SOPs, plans and policies for tsunami warning and emergency response.

During the exercise, the Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC) at Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad will provide simulated tsunami threat information as an occurrence of Gigantic Earthquake measuring 9.0 Mw in richter scale near the Andaman Trench on 4th Oct, 2023 at 0930 IST and followed by Tsunami generation and issue alerts/warning in the form of bulletins to all coastal States of India and to other countries in the Indian Ocean region. These alerts/warnings/advices/threat pass will further disseminated from the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) to all other Emergency Operation Centres situated in other Islands through different means of communication channels to test the communication channels. In this lOWave 23, the Administration is also testing communication & response system of all Emergency Support Functionaries of A & N Islands,

General Public have been advised not to panic during this Tsunami Mock Drill / Communication Test Indian Ocean Wide Tsunami Communication Exercise (IOWave23) on 4th, Oct, 2023 scheduled to start from 0930 1ST in A&N Islands on the created mock scenario mega earthquake and tsunami generation.
