Port Blair, Oct. 13: The Prevention of Cruelty of Animal Act, 1960 has provision for alleviation of suffering of animals. There are various Rules under the PCA Act 1960, which address issues concerning cruelty to animals. Section 11 of the PCA act 1960 prohibits confining animals in unreasonably small spaces. In this context, use of gestation/farrowing crates for pigs is not recommended.

It is cruelty and a punishable offence if anyone "keeps or confines any animal in any cage or other receptacle which does not measure sufficiently in height, length and breadth to permit the animal a reasonable opportunity for movement", both gestation and farrowing crates fail to allow a sow to make reasonable movements and are thus, illegal. It is the duty of every person having care or charge of any animal to take all reasonable measures to ensure the wellbeing of such animals and to prevent infliction of unnecessary pain and suffering.

The general public have been requested to make themselves aware of the provisions of the PCA Act 1960 and take active part in alleviating animal suffering.
